Before the tragic Kaduna-Abuja accident in August 2025, the NRC had already suspended the Warri-Itakpe train service on August 2nd due to a series of technical issues and breakdowns. However, the official resumption of services was announced on October 26th, with the NRC promising a return to normalcy on October 29th.
But here's where it gets controversial: just four days after the resumption, the train derailed again, causing the NRC to halt operations.
In a statement released by the NRC's Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, the corporation revealed that the derailment occurred at precisely 7:30 pm on Saturday at Kilometre 212+8m in Agbor, Delta State. The statement further indicated that preliminary investigations point towards suspected track vandalism as the cause of the incident.
Opeifa's statement assured that all passengers were safely evacuated to Agbor, with no casualties or injuries reported. The recovery team, supported by security personnel, has been working tirelessly at the site, and their efforts are expected to conclude soon.
As a precautionary measure, the NRC has temporarily suspended train services on the corridor to conduct a thorough security and safety audit of the track and its infrastructure.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the NRC, as data from the National Bureau of Statistics reveals a staggering number of over 188 rail-related incidents between 2020 and 2025. Many of these incidents are directly linked to vandalism and criminal activities, raising concerns about the safety and reliability of Nigeria's railway system.
