A remarkable discovery has been made by Cambridge University archaeologists and students, unearthing a 9th-century mass burial pit during a training dig. This find, located at Wandlebury Country Park, has sparked intrigue and raised questions about the past.
The pit, believed to date back to a time of conflict between the Saxon-ruled Mercia and the Viking-conquered East Anglia, holds the remains of at least 10 individuals. Among them, a giant of a man, standing well over six feet tall, with a skull that underwent trepanning, an ancient surgical procedure.
But here's where it gets controversial: Dr. Trish Biers, curator of the Duckworth Collections, suggests that the man's height might be attributed to a tumor affecting his pituitary gland, causing an excess of growth hormones. Could this have been the reason for the trepanning, an attempt to alleviate the headaches caused by the tumor?
The remaining bones include a cluster of skulls and a stack of legs, indicating a lack of care in the burial process. Archaeologists estimate the age of these individuals to be between 17 and 24 years old.
Dr. Oscar Aldred, who led the dig, proposes an intriguing theory: "Those buried could have been recipients of corporal punishment, and that may be connected to Wandlebury as a sacred or well-known meeting place." He further speculates that the body parts may have been displayed as trophies before being thrown into the pit.
And this is the part most people miss: the state of decomposition suggests that the bodies were not deliberately chopped up but rather fell apart naturally before being interred.
Grace Grandfield, an undergraduate participant, expressed her shock at the discovery: "It was a sobering experience to realize the extent of the suffering that had taken place, especially considering the age of some of the individuals we uncovered."
Olivia Courtney, a third-year archaeology student, echoed these sentiments, feeling a unique connection to these ancient people: "We were separated by only a few years in age, yet over a thousand years in time."
