The situation in Ukraine is rapidly evolving, with recent reports indicating a significant shift in the battle for Kupiansk. But what does this mean for the larger conflict?
According to Ukrainian sources, Russian forces in Kupiansk are now completely cut off. This claim comes from a Ukrainian commander, Ihor Obolienskyi, head of the Khartiia Corps of the National Guard. He stated that the Russian troops were surrounded, a stark contrast to previous reports. This news follows President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Kupiansk, where he praised the defending troops. It's worth noting that Russia's Ministry of Defence previously claimed to have seized the town on November 21st.
But here's where it gets controversial: Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed Kupiansk was 'practically in the hands of Russian forces' as early as November 4th. He stated that his forces were 'finishing mopping up isolated neighbourhoods and streets.' This highlights a key aspect of the conflict: the battle of narratives. Ukrainian commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskii accused the enemy of using disinformation and fake maps in a hybrid war.
In the meantime, fighting continues in the contested eastern city of Pokrovsk. Despite Russian claims of having seized it entirely, Ukrainian forces are still battling for control. Syrskii reported that Ukrainian troops control almost 13 square kilometres (five square miles) in the northern part of the city, describing the situation as an 'extremely difficult phase.'
And this is the part most people miss: Ukrainian forces have been strategically retreating and fighting their way back into Pokrovsk. Syrskii explained that at one point, Ukrainian troops were absent from the city due to limited capabilities. He also noted that Ukrainian forces hold 54 sq km (21 square miles) west of the city. Additionally, Ukrainian forces are resisting Russian advances in Myrnohrad, east of Pokrovsk. These two cities are almost surrounded, with supply lines and evacuation routes limited to a narrow western corridor.
What's the bigger picture? The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) suggests that Russian narratives are part of a campaign to pressure Ukraine into a peace agreement, a plan that demands Ukraine cede Pokrovsk and other key areas. The ISW estimates that it would take Russia at least two to three years to seize the rest of Donetsk Oblast, a significant challenge that could result in costly battles. Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine has not agreed to any territorial concessions.

Economic and military impacts: Russia's progress has been slow despite highly publicized seizures of villages and rural terrain. Last year, Russia seized 4,168 sq km (1,609 sq miles), or 0.69 percent of Ukraine. This year, the ISW estimates 4,669 sq km (1,802 sq miles), or 0.77 percent of Ukraine. During this time, Russia has suffered an estimated 820,000 casualties. Russia is facing a labor shortage of 2.3 million workers in manufacturing, construction, agriculture, and services. The Russian economy has slowed down, leading to cuts in defense spending. The European Union is taking further economic action, freezing 210bn euros ($246bn) in Russian assets to support Ukraine's war effort.
The human cost: Despite the challenges, Ukrainian troops continue to fight. A Russian assault company commander, Vladimir, described the intense fighting in Donetsk, highlighting the enemy's resilience. He mentioned the difficulty of the last fight and the refusal of the enemy to surrender.
