The U.S. truck freight market is experiencing a subtle yet significant recovery, with the latest U.S. Bank Freight Payment Index revealing a 1.5% increase in national shipments and a 4.6% surge in spending during Q4 2025. This marks a three-year recession's end, with shippers paying more for slightly more freight, indicating a tightening capacity situation. Despite a 4.9% year-over-year decline in shipment volumes, this quarter's drop is the smallest since Q2 2022, suggesting a potential turning point. Overall, 2025 freight levels are down 9.9% from 2024, but this is a significant improvement from the 20.4% annual decline in 2024. Shipper spending rose 5.2% year-over-year in Q4, the first increase in three years, indicating rate pressure. This spending increase is not due to diesel price drops, which averaged 5.2 cents per gallon lower than Q3. All five U.S. regions saw sequential spending increases, with four regions experiencing year-over-year gains, further evidence of tightening capacity.
