Standard Chartered CEO: Blockchain Will Power ALL Global Transactions! (2025)

The future of finance is here, and it's digital. Standard Chartered's CEO, Bill Winters, has made a bold prediction that nearly all global transactions will eventually be powered by blockchain technology. This revolutionary idea was shared during a panel discussion at Hong Kong FinTech Week, where Winters highlighted the potential for a complete overhaul of the financial system.

But here's where it gets controversial: Winters believes that not only will transactions settle on blockchains, but all money will be digital. This concept challenges our traditional understanding of currency and opens up a world of possibilities for international trade and investment.

Standard Chartered, a leading multinational bank, has been actively exploring the digital asset space. They've expanded their involvement in recent years, offering digital asset custody services, trading platforms, and even venturing into tokenized products. The bank's CEO credits Hong Kong for its leadership in this domain, particularly in experimentation and regulation.

Hong Kong, aiming to establish itself as a regional crypto hub, has implemented a digital asset licensing regime and launched tokenization pilots. Standard Chartered is actively participating in these initiatives, showcasing its commitment to the digital transformation of finance.

Tokenized assets are digital representations of real-world assets, such as stocks, bonds, or commodities, recorded and traded on blockchains or distributed ledgers. Stablecoins, pegged to a currency, serve as an early example of tradable tokenized assets.

In a partnership with Animoca Brands and HKT, Standard Chartered plans to launch a Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin under a new regulatory framework introduced by the city in August. Winters believes that these stablecoins could become a significant medium of exchange for international trade conducted digitally.

And this is the part most people miss: Winters' vision is not an isolated one. Other global fintech leaders, like Vlad Tenev of Robinhood Markets and Larry Fink of BlackRock, have also made bullish predictions for tokenized assets. Tenev describes tokenization as a "freight train" coming to most major markets within the next five years, while Fink sees it as a "revolution" that will tokenize every asset class.

So, what do you think? Is the future of finance truly digital? Will blockchain power nearly all global transactions? Join the discussion and share your thoughts in the comments!
