Get ready, racing fans! The legendary Ryan Hunter-Reay, a name synonymous with speed and skill, is back in the mix! He's joining Arrow McLaren for the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500 in 2026, and the excitement is already building. This marks a significant moment, as Hunter-Reay, the 2014 Indy 500 champion and 2012 INDYCAR SERIES champion, will be driving the team's No. 31 Chevrolet, completing their four-car lineup.
Hunter-Reay, at 44 years old, brings a wealth of experience to the team. He'll be racing alongside full-time Arrow McLaren drivers Pato O’Ward, Nolan Siegel, and Christian Lundgaard at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the Month of May.
Hunter-Reay himself expressed his gratitude, highlighting the incredible opportunity and his honor to represent such a prestigious team. He's clearly fired up, eager to make the most of this partnership after coming agonizingly close to victory in last year's race.
With an impressive career spanning 21 seasons and 395 INDYCAR SERIES starts, Hunter-Reay has secured 18 victories and 47 podium finishes. He's a true champion, and his record at IMS speaks for itself, as he'll be aiming for his 18th Indy 500 start next year. He joins an elite group of active drivers who have both an INDYCAR SERIES championship and an Indy 500 win, including Scott Dixon, Josef Newgarden, Alex Palou, and Will Power.
Arrow McLaren has a history of bringing in exceptional drivers for this legendary race. Past participants include Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso, two-time Indy 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya, 2013 Indy 500 winner Tony Kanaan, and two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson.
But here's where it gets controversial... Hunter-Reay's 2014 Indy 500 win was a nail-biter, decided by a mere 0.600 of a second – the second-closest finish in the race's history. He narrowly edged out Helio Castroneves in a stunning display of skill and determination. And let's not forget his near-victory in 2025, where he led 48 laps before a fuel issue hampered his chances.
Tony Kanaan, Arrow McLaren’s team principal, is thrilled to have Hunter-Reay on board. He emphasized that Hunter-Reay is a proven winner and a valuable teammate.
Hunter-Reay's success isn't limited to IndyCar. He has multiple IMSA sports car wins, including the 12 Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans. He's also been invited to the Race of Champions five times and has won two ESPY Driver of the Year awards.
