Patrick Mahomes' Struggles Continue: Chiefs Fall to Bills (2025)

Patrick Mahomes, the NFL's golden boy, just had one of his worst games in a Chiefs uniform, and it happened against a familiar foe: the Buffalo Bills. This shocking performance came in a 28-21 loss, leaving fans and analysts alike wondering what went wrong. But here's where it gets controversial... is this a sign of a decline, or just a blip on the radar?

Following the disappointing defeat, Mahomes was understandably hesitant to look too far ahead, especially when the possibility of another playoff clash with the Bills was raised. "We’ve got to get there first," he stated, acknowledging the long road ahead.

The Chiefs have a complicated history with the Bills. They've lost five straight regular-season games to Buffalo. However, in the playoffs, the Chiefs have dominated, going 4-0 against the Bills since the 2020 postseason, including a victory in last season's AFC championship game.

Just when it seemed the Chiefs had found their rhythm, winning three straight and five of six games, they stumbled against the Bills. "We’ve had great moments and we’ve had bad moments," Mahomes admitted. "We’ve got to be more consistent as a team. I’ve got to be more consistent at quarterback. And we’ve got to be able to battle."

Mahomes's stat line was far from his usual stellar standard. He completed only 15 of 34 passes for 250 yards and threw an interception. This performance marked the first time in his nine-year career that he completed fewer than 50% of his passes. It was also only the 10th time he failed to throw a touchdown pass in a regular-season game.

The interception came late in the game, ending a potential comeback drive. Facing a third-and-11, Mahomes was pressured and threw a pass that was intercepted by rookie Maxwell Hairston. The Bills' defense, with three sacks and 15 quarterback hits, clearly disrupted Mahomes's rhythm.

On the other side of the field, Josh Allen had an outstanding performance, setting a team record by completing 88% of his passes (23 of 26) for 273 yards and three touchdowns (one passing and two rushing). Mahomes acknowledged Allen's dominance, saying, "You know it’s going to come down to a couple of plays, and they made those plays today. Josh was amazing."

It's worth noting that this subpar performance came after a three-game winning streak where Mahomes had been on fire, completing 74% of his passes for an average of 281 yards, with nine touchdowns and only two interceptions. During that stretch, the Chiefs had dominated the Lions, Raiders, and Commanders.

Mahomes recognized the Bills' defensive strategy, saying, "They have good pass rushers and they had a good plan of doing some games up front and pushing the pocket. I’ve got to be better at working the pocket and finding different lanes to step up into."

There were a few bright spots for Mahomes, including a 29-yard completion on a fourth-and-17 conversion. However, the bad outweighed the good, as the Chiefs turned the ball over on downs and had to settle for a field goal after a promising drive stalled. The Bills capitalized on their opportunities, with Allen leading the charge.

Coach Andy Reid emphasized the importance of scoring touchdowns against a team like the Bills. Mahomes was overheard rallying his teammates after the game, emphasizing the need to improve quickly. "We’ve got to do it now," he said. "There’s no easy games coming up and there’s no more chances where we can take losses. We’ve got to learn from it fast."

The Chiefs now enter their bye week before facing the AFC West division-leading Denver Broncos. Mahomes acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, "It’s going to be an uphill battle when we get back. But I think our guys are up for it."

So, what do you think? Was this a one-off bad game, or a sign of a deeper issue? Do you think the Chiefs can turn things around and overcome their regular-season struggles against the Bills in the playoffs? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
