The initiative, spearheaded by the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat, aims to provide a stable and reliable energy supply, a critical factor for industrial and economic development. And this is the part most people miss: by reducing dependence on traditional energy sources, the biomass plant will not only power industries but also create opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs. Simon Madjie, representing the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat, highlighted that the project is already fostering collaboration with traditional authorities in Damanko, Nkwanta North District, to cultivate 25,000 to 30,000 hectares of Napier grass. This locally sourced biomass will fuel the plant, ensuring a sustainable and region-specific solution to energy needs.
Here’s where it gets controversial: while the project has been endorsed by figures like Nana Mprah Besemuna III, former President of the Oti Regional House of Chiefs, who cited the region’s unstable electricity supply as a pressing issue, some may question the environmental impact of large-scale biomass production.
