Mitchell Marsh's Ashes Comeback: A Shock Return to Shield Cricket (2026)

Is Mitchell Marsh about to make a stunning return to Test cricket? That's the question on everyone's lips as the Australian all-rounder gears up for a surprise comeback to the Sheffield Shield. But why now, and what does this mean for the upcoming Ashes series? Let's dive in!

Mitchell Marsh, the current Australian T20I captain, hasn't played a Test match since Boxing Day 2024. He's now set to play Shield cricket in early December for Western Australia.

Interestingly, reserve Test wicketkeeper Josh Inglis is also in the mix, slated to play for the Cricket Australia XI against the England Lions. He's expected to bat high up the order as well.

Marsh's return is an intriguing development, especially considering his previous comments about watching the first Test from the stands. He won't be playing in WA's upcoming Shield clash but is slated for the match against Victoria. He's also likely to play in a One-Day Cup match.

Marsh, aged 34, hasn't played a first-class match since being dropped from the Australian side. He's even been hesitant about playing more first-class cricket for his state.

However, the selectors have been quietly planning for months to keep Marsh in the red-ball calculations. They've been impressed with his recent white-ball form and his strong record against high-pace bowling, which England is expected to use in the Ashes. Coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed the selectors would be comfortable picking Marsh if needed.

But here's where it gets controversial... There are questions about Usman Khawaja's ability to perform in the Ashes, given his recent form against high pace. Australia's other opening position is also up for grabs, with potential debutant Jake Weatherald possibly being Khawaja's seventh opening partner in the last 16 Tests.

Marsh has never opened the batting in his 210 first-class innings and has only batted at No.3 three times. There may be a discussion between the selectors and WA about where Marsh bats, especially since his Shield appearance might be a one-off before the BBL begins.

If Marsh were to open, it would break up WA's long-standing opening duo. Former Australia captain Greg Chappell even advocated for Marsh to open the batting in Perth. Marsh's Test average is 28.53 after 80 innings. His best performances have come at No. 6, where he has averaged 31.24.

Marsh won't be available as an all-rounder as his bowling has been sidelined due to a back injury.

Inglis is being held in Perth and will play in the CA XI game to be available as a concussion sub. He is set to bat high in the order against England Lions to give him the most time in the middle.

What do you think? Will Marsh's return be a game-changer for the Ashes? Do you agree with the selectors' approach? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
