Mastodon's latest update is here, and it's bringing a game-changer: Quote Posts! This new feature is rolling out to all server operators with version 4.5, and it's designed to enhance conversations and give users more control. But, it's not just about adding a feature; it's about doing it right.
Mastodon, the decentralized social network, is stepping up its game to compete with giants like X and Threads. Quote posts are a fundamental part of text-based social networks, but Mastodon is taking a different approach to ensure a positive user experience.
And this is the part most people miss... The platform is taking extra steps to protect users. On platforms like X (formerly Twitter), quote posts, often led to a culture of negativity, where users would use them to make fun of others. This is a problem that also exists on other new competitors, like Threads and Bluesky.
To combat this, Mastodon's quote posts come with built-in safety features. Users have multiple ways to control how their posts are quoted. You can choose who can quote you through settings, including "Anyone," "Followers only," or "Just me." You can also control the visibility of quote posts, making them public, visible only to followers, or even "quiet public," which removes them from search and trends.
But here's where it gets controversial... Users can override their default settings on a post-by-post basis, which can be useful in specific situations. Mastodon will also notify users when they're being quoted, allowing them to remove their original post if they wish. Plus, users can block others to prevent them from seeing and quoting their posts in the future.
Beyond quote posts, the 4.5 update also addresses issues with older servers, ensuring users don't miss replies. Server operators gain new tools to disable content feeds, set a local feed as their homepage, and block specific users. The moderation interface has also been updated for better context, including link previews and quote posts. Native emoji support is another addition to Mastodon's web interface.
Mastodon is a major player in the fediverse, the open social web powered by ActivityPub. The fediverse boasts nearly 12 million users, with Mastodon accounting for over 8 million. While Mastodon has a strong user base, it's interesting to note its monthly active user number is around 670,000.
For comparison, Threads, which integrates with ActivityPub, isn't fully counted in these figures. Threads has over 400 million monthly users and 150 million daily active users.
What do you think? Are these new features enough to make Mastodon a more attractive platform? Do you think the safety controls will be effective? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
