Imagine this: You're a rising star, leading a top college football program, and suddenly, whispers start circulating about the NFL's New York Giants eyeing you for their head coaching vacancy. That's the reality for Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman, and his reaction is a masterclass in humility and perspective. But what does this really mean for Freeman, and what can we learn from his response?
After the Giants' decision to part ways with their head coach, Brian Daboll, Freeman's name surfaced as a potential candidate, as reported by The Post's Paul Schwartz on the "Blue Rush" podcast. When asked about this, Freeman's response was telling. He expressed that it was "humbling" to be considered by such a storied franchise.
"The gratitude you have, for one, even being mentioned by an organization like that. I got a lot of respect for all NFL teams, but the history of the Giants is tremendous," Freeman shared. "But it’s gratitude for me, it reminds me of the honor that I have to be in the position I have. And I’ve said that before. I use that to remind myself of the gratitude that I have for this position because you wouldn’t have said that statement if I didn’t have this job and we weren’t having success.”
Here's the contrast: While the Giants are struggling with a disappointing 2-11 record and a mid-season coaching change, Notre Dame, under Freeman, is thriving. Ranked 10th in the College Football Playoff Top 25, the Fighting Irish have a 10-game winning streak after a tough 0-2 start. Freeman's record since taking over at the end of the 2021 season is an impressive 43-12, including bowl game appearances every year and a College Football Playoff national title game appearance last season.
Freeman acknowledges the recognition is a byproduct of his success at Notre Dame. "The result of [success at Notre Dame] is having your name mentioned for a place like the New York Giants or any other major program," he added. "It’s humbling, but I always use it as a reminder to be grateful for what I have because if you’re not grateful for it, I often say you’re gonna lose it.”
But here's where it gets controversial... While Freeman seems content at Notre Dame, the allure of the NFL is undeniable. Would the Giants, or another team, be able to lure him away with a compelling offer? It's a question that could keep fans guessing. Giants general manager Joe Schoen, however, is currently focused on supporting interim head coach Mike Kafka. "My focus right now is on supporting Kafka as we go forward and we’ll evaluate all aspects of the football operation as we go forward," Schoen said. "Has it been perfect? No, but I’m very confident in my staff, in myself, and our ability to get this franchise back to where it needs to go.”
