Huntingdon Train Attack: Police Probe Suspect’s Link to Knife Incidents in Peterborough (2026)

A shocking act of violence on a train has left the community reeling, prompting a thorough investigation into the suspect's background and any potential links to other disturbing incidents.

Following a mass stabbing on a train in Cambridgeshire, 32-year-old Anthony Williams has been brought before the court. The charges against him are severe: 11 counts of attempted murder stemming from the Saturday train attack, as reported by ITV News Correspondent Rachel Younger. But the story doesn't end there.

Police are diligently exploring potential connections between the train attack and three other knife-related incidents in Peterborough. Two of these occurred on Friday, and one took place early Saturday morning. This is all part of a comprehensive probe to understand the full scope of the events leading up to the horrific train attack.

During the Saturday incident, a member of the train staff bravely intervened, attempting to stop the attacker. This individual remains in the hospital in critical but stable condition. Their courageous act has been widely recognized, with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood calling them a hero.

On Monday, Williams appeared in court, where he was formally charged with the attempted murder counts related to the Saturday train attack and an earlier incident at a London station. The suspect, who is of no fixed abode, was remanded in custody. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood expressed that the public would have many unanswered questions about the attacker and the events that unfolded.

But here's where it gets controversial... The police are actively investigating whether the knife-related incidents in Peterborough are connected to the Huntingdon train attack. These incidents include the non-fatal stabbing of a 14-year-old boy on Friday evening and a report of a man with a knife at a barbershop. Another report of a knifeman at the barbershop was made on Saturday morning.

It has been confirmed that the attacker was not known to security services prior to the train attack. The government is now examining how to prevent further knife attacks. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has paid tribute to the bravery of those on the train, particularly the staff member who put himself in harm’s way.

There were a total of 13 casualties, with eight still hospitalized. British Transport Police declared a major incident after the train stopped in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, and passengers pulled the emergency alarms.

The LNER driver involved in the incident stated that he did what any other driver would do and called on the signaler to divert the train to Huntingdon when the stabbings took place. He also praised the bravery of his colleagues.

One of the victims of Saturday's attack has been identified as Scunthorpe United defender Jonathan Gjoshe. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries but remains in the hospital.

And this is the part most people miss... Williams is also charged with one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of possession of a bladed article. Furthermore, he faces charges related to an incident at Pontoon Dock DLR station in London, where a victim suffered facial injuries. Court documents indicate that a “large kitchen knife” was allegedly used in both attacks. The investigation into the train attack by British Transport Police will include the stabbing of the 14-year-old and the incident at the barber’s shop.

During his court appearance, Williams, wearing a grey tracksuit and in handcuffs, did not enter a plea and mumbled “no fixed abode” when asked about his address. He was remanded in custody until a hearing at Cambridge Crown Court on December 1. The prosecutor, Olaide Esan, argued against bail, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges and the risk Williams poses to the public.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated that the suspect was not known to counter-terrorism police or MI5, but she would not disclose whether he had any contact with mental health services. Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy emphasized that the criminal investigation and support for the victims are priorities for British Transport Police. Defence Secretary John Healey praised the swift response of the police officers.

What are your thoughts on the attacker not being known to security services? Do you think more could have been done to prevent this tragedy?
