Greenlanders Reject Trump’s ‘Insane’ Plan to Buy Their Land | Voices from Nuuk (2026)

Imagine this: A world leader proposes a deal that could reshape a nation, but the people of that nation are vehemently opposed. This is the reality in Greenland, where the local population is fiercely rejecting Donald Trump's proposition to incorporate their land into the United States.

On the streets of Nuuk, Greenland's capital, the sentiment is clear: they want no part of it. "He's insane, absolutely insane," states Ruth Søholm, a 65-year-old retail worker, reflecting the widespread disapproval. "We don’t belong to America. We are Inuit. We don’t want to be Americans."

Trump's vision, however, involves overcoming all obstacles to secure this vast Arctic territory for the US. He's even hinted at using force, disregarding European objections. "We are going to do something on Greenland whether they like it or not," he declared, citing concerns about Russia or China gaining influence.

To sweeten the deal, White House officials reportedly considered offering each resident up to $100,000 (approximately $150,000). But in Nuuk, the disdain is palpable. A group of young boys expressed their feelings in just three words: "We hate Trump."

But here's where it gets controversial... Trump's strategy seems to be missing the mark. This former Danish colony, proud of its Inuit heritage, has its own parliament and government, and the people want a say in their future. Søholm believes Trump is more interested in the land than the people. "He should take care of his own people," she says, questioning the focus on Greenland given the social issues in America.

And this is the part most people miss... The resistance is so strong that money alone seems unlikely to change minds. Carl Petersen, a retiree, says, "Even if you offer $500,000 each, or $1 million, we don’t want their money. We want to be free."

This isn't the first time the US has considered acquiring Greenland. Discussions happened in 1867, and a secret offer was made in 1946. Trump, however, has made it a central issue, citing concerns about Russian and Chinese activity around Greenland.

He has also emphasized the potential commercial gains, calling it a "large real estate deal." White House officials have also discussed gaining access to Greenland's critical minerals, essential for technology and defense.

Adding Greenland would significantly expand the US, surpassing the Louisiana Purchase and the purchase of Alaska. However, it's crucial to remember that in the past, land deals were made without considering the people who lived there.

So, what do Greenlanders want? A poll from a year ago showed that 85% opposed joining the US, with only 6% in favor. The Danish and Greenlandic leaders also oppose Trump's ambitions, knowing the public's sentiment.

Talks continue, but there's no indication of the US gaining control. The people of Nuuk believe their future is theirs to decide. "We’re trying to be independent," says Susan Bech. The five political parties in Greenland's parliament have also made a joint statement, asking the US to respect their country and affirming that their future is for the Greenlandic people to decide: "We will not be Americans, we will not be Danes, we are Greenlanders."

What are your thoughts? Do you think money can buy a nation's loyalty? Do you agree with Greenland's stance, or do you see potential benefits for them in joining the US? Share your opinions in the comments below!
