In a bold declaration, Elon Musk expresses optimism about xAI's future, emphasizing that the next few years are crucial for its success.
Recently, during a company-wide meeting at xAI’s headquarters in San Francisco, Musk conveyed to employees that if the organization can navigate the upcoming two to three years, it stands a strong chance of outperforming its competitors. This insight comes from multiple insiders who attended the gathering.
Musk, who leads the AI firm, underscored the importance of xAI’s ability to quickly enhance its power and data capabilities in the competitive race toward achieving superintelligence—an intelligence level that exceeds human capacity. He confidently mentioned that xAI might reach artificial general intelligence (AGI), which is equivalent to or surpasses human reasoning, within the next few years, possibly even as soon as 2026.
In November, Musk noted that with their Grok 5 model, there was a 10% probability of successfully attaining AGI, a model the company aims to launch early next year.
Additionally, Musk informed the team that xAI would have a significant financial edge over its rivals, with access to estimated annual funding between $20 billion to $30 billion. The proximity to his other ventures, such as Tesla—which integrated Grok into its vehicles earlier this year—also provides strategic advantages to xAI.
Overall, employees reported that Musk seemed pleased with the progress being made within the company, describing the atmosphere of the meeting as "energetic" and "upbeat."
Furthermore, Musk shared his visionary ideas about establishing data centers in space and his broader ambitions for Mars colonization, suggesting that Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, could eventually manage these extraterrestrial facilities. Notably, Musk has previously stated that Optimus might assist with SpaceX missions as early as next year. This concept aligns with discussions by other tech leaders like Google’s Sundar Pichai and OpenAI’s Sam Altman, who have also considered the feasibility of space-based data centers, although Pichai referred to it as a "moonshot."

Over the past year, xAI has significantly broadened its data center operations under the initiative named Colossus. Earlier this year, the company reported having approximately 200,000 GPUs, with plans to ramp up to a staggering 1 million GPUs in the near future.
As one of many companies striving to create AGI and validate valuations in the hundreds of billions, xAI faces stiff competition from established giants like OpenAI and Google. Despite Musk's high-profile status, xAI remains a newcomer in this rapidly evolving landscape.
The urgency in the AI domain is palpable; just this month, OpenAI reportedly entered a state of emergency while racing to release its latest model. Concurrently, Google unveiled a new Gemini model in November, while xAI has been consistently rolling out updates to its Grok models.
During the all-hands meeting, xAI leaders showcased various product enhancements, including updates to Grok Voice, which serves Tesla owners. Improvements highlighted included Grok's enhanced predictive abilities, upgraded listening capabilities, and new video editing features.
