The heavyweight division: a battleground of legends. It's a realm where titans clash, and the names echo through the annals of combat sports. But who truly deserves the crown of 'greatest of all time'? Alistair Overeem, a veteran of over 65 professional MMA bouts, has a surprising answer, and it might just change how you view the sport.
Many consider Fedor Emelianenko, despite never gracing the UFC octagon, as the ultimate heavyweight. His legendary winning streak is a testament to his dominance in a division known for its unpredictability. In the UFC, Stipe Miocic holds the record for the most consecutive title defenses, solidifying his place in history.
But here's where it gets controversial... Overeem believes another icon has been unfairly overlooked.
During a recent interview, Overeem, who has faced the vast majority of top names in his era, shared his thoughts with Bloody Elbow while attending Brave 100 fight week in Bahrain. When asked about his most underrated opponent, he didn't hesitate: Fabricio Werdum.
Werdum, the man who famously ended Emelianenko's incredible win streak, is, in Overeem's eyes, one of the best to ever compete in the division. Werdum's impressive resume includes victories over fighters like Cain Velasquez, showcasing his skills as a Brazilian submission specialist. Overeem, who battled Werdum in Pride, Strikeforce, and the UFC, believes his former rival deserves more respect. "I think maybe Werdum even though he did become champion. I think he was somebody who kind of went under the radar before, during he was there and then after he also disappeared on the radar but he was a formidable opponent. Extremely intelligent.”
But Overeem isn't alone in this assessment. Joe Rogan, the long-time UFC commentator, also recognizes Werdum's greatness. During a fight companion podcast, Rogan called Werdum the "overlooked GOAT heavyweight." Werdum seemingly retired from MMA earlier this year at the age of 47.
What do you think? Is Fabricio Werdum truly the 'overlooked GOAT'? Do you agree with Overeem and Rogan, or do you have a different perspective on the greatest heavyweights of all time? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
