In the heart of Morocco, a group of exiled Afghan women footballers are finding solace and hope on the pitch. Noori, a 22-year-old refugee, fled a country where the United Nations has described authorities as implementing a 'gender apartheid'. She now plays for Afghan Women United, a team of Afghan refugee women, and recently participated in a groundbreaking tournament in Morocco. Noori's decision to leave was driven by the Taliban's restrictions on women's rights, including banning them from education, sports, and most jobs. Before the Taliban's return, she defied family pressure to play for Afghanistan's national women's team, even burying her trophies in her family's backyard. The team, formed in Europe and Australia, played their first international matches at the FIFA Unites: Women's Series, with Noori scoring the first goal. Despite losing to Chad and Tunisia, they secured a significant 7-0 win over Libya. FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised their participation as a 'beautiful story' for girls and women worldwide. Nilab Mohammadi, a 28-year-old striker and former soldier, emphasized the sport's significance, stating, 'Football represents life and hope.' The team's determination to compete officially as Afghanistan's national women's team is unwavering, despite FIFA's pending decision. Aish Ravi, a researcher on gender equity in sports, admires their resilience, describing them as 'strong and inspiring' who have overcome 'enormous adversity' to play football, a symbol of freedom for them. Despite the challenges of being far from home, Ahmadi dreams of playing in Europe, emphasizing the importance of moving forward.
